The Chariot of self-expression and action in control of his own fate
The Chariot card represents power, self-discipline and confidence in oneself - driving forward in the beautifully embossed chariot and making the right choice
In the tarot sequence, the charioteer as the chariot card is also known, is assigned the number seven that represents progress, self-expression and action taken independently. The Chariot card is symbolically significant as it portrays the fate of the person who, faced by the dilemma in the previous card, the lovers, has made the right choice and successfully transferred his attention from his mother to his beloved and therefore is in control of his fate.
Dressed in armour, the warrior travels smoothly along the road of life, protected within his four sided chariot, instinctively and skilfully guiding himself effortlessly along his way.
The chariot card is the card of gradual easing oneself into adulthood, learning from an early age to play a role in life and fitting within society in the manner of those we admire the most, adopting ways to try to appear to others as we would like them to see us.
A young child learns the type of behaviour expected of it by its elders and reacts accordingly. The chariot demonstrates the growing of a child, smoothing out rough edges and filling in the gaps as it learns and grows. If done well, by the time it reaches adulthood, the child is well adjusted and well equipped to face the world.
Not everyone gets it right and some people can be inadequate and inconsistent in their behaviour, their development of their personality has been restricted and this aspect is the negative side of the Chariot.
The Charioteer driving the chariot uses his trained intellect and self-control to discipline himself to concentrate on any single aim in life. He can confidently strive to reach goals and overcome any obstacles placed before him and dictate his own path through life. He can also be manipulative to ensure his success to his own advantage.
When reversed, the chariot card represents the man of power and wealth, a dictatorial person who uses his power and material wealth to ride rough-shod over anyone who would dare to oppose his plans or question his aims as he believes himself to be right above all others in driving forward in the chariot.
Divinatory meanings: The Chariot
Upright: Success, triumph over the obstacles life throws in one’s path. Secure progress, victory achieved through personal effort, the triumph of initiative. Not success through fortune or given by other means.
Reversed: One who rides rough-shod over others. Dictatorial forcefulness, no thought with regard to the rights of others, egotistical, ruthlessness in the reversed chariot.
